December 15, 2008

Dedicated Carve Readers,

This is an exciting issue for us!  We have recently added twitter to our social networking-network, we've announced our Pushcart Prize nominations, we've updated our very own bios so you can know what we're up to when we're not buried to our necks in submissions, and we're finally getting caught up with our snail mail submissions!  (You'll get your response soon if you haven't already!)

And of course, there are four new stories that I hope you enjoy.  As always, Carve strives to have diverse voices and stories represented in the magazine, whether they're from published veterans or newcomers to the literary scene.  This past year has showcased our strongest and most unique stories yet.  It's not too late to read them if you've missed our earlier issues.  Just click over to the Archives page!

If you'd rather have the stories in your hands, in a paperback bound book, our 2008 Anthology will be coming soon within the first couple months of 2009.  The anthology will feature all 16 stories published this year.

Reaching further back into our history, our new Carve Classics page will be premiering soon as well.  This page will be dedicated to the stories published before 2007 under the previous editor.  While not all the stories will be immediately available, we hope this new section of the site will spur the completion of the complete magazine archives.

And last but not least, the 2009 Raymond Carver Short Story will be in the summer issue, meaning the contest is only a couple of months away!  Follow our twitter, our Facebook, or subscribe by email to make sure you are the first to know when the judge is announced and when submissions are accepted!

But in the meantime, you have four stories to read.  Enjoy them all!

Sincerely,

Matthew Limpede, Editor

CARVE RECOMMENDS...

When the Nines Roll Over
David Benioff

This collection is a personal favorite. Each story is a fine example of craft—every detail matters and every word of dialogue is essential.  David Benioff is also the author of The 25th Hour and has penned several films, including Troy and the upcoming X-Men spinoff Wolverine.  But don't let the Hollywood titles deter you.  Benioff is a versatile writer, and his literary skills are superbly displayed in this collection.
